An abdominal aortic aneurysm is an enlarged area in the lower part of the major vessel that supplies blood to the body ( Aorta). The Aorta runs from your heart through the center of your chest and abdomen.
The Aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body, so a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm can cause life-threatening bleeding.
In our screening clinic, we will measure the size of your Aorta with Ultrasound, calculate your risk of rupture, give a recommendation about life style changes, and how often you should get a scan if your Aorta is enlarged.
- Men are 6 times more likely to have an abdominal aortic aneurysm than women.
- Men are at higher risk if they are smokers, have high cholesterol, have high blood pressure and have a family history of aneurysms.
